The joint Georgia Tech–Emory Department of Biomedical Engineering ranked 2nd best in the country in recent survey

The bioscience industry in Georgia consist of mostly small and medium-sized companies as well as corporations.  International investors are an important part of the bioscience community in the state.

GEORGIA COMPANIES INCLUDE:

Altea Therapeutics is an emerging specialty pharmaceutical company developing and commercializing products based on a new transdermal patch technology that can deliver sustained therapeutic levels of water-soluble drug salts, therapeutic proteins, vaccines and carbohydrates through the skin in a convenient, painless, and cost-effective manner. Altea Therapeutics has demonstrated in several clinical studies that it’s patented PassPort Transdermal System achieves what existing transdermal patches are unable to do, namely the continuous delivery through the skin of compounds that are typically administered by needle injections.

Atlanta Center for Medical Research (ACMR) is a 24-hour privately owned research facility with a secured, 40-bed inpatient unit. We conduct both outpatient and inpatient clinical trials with experience in Phases I through IV of industry sponsored pharmaceutical trials. Established in 1982, ACMR has become a primary research site in the United States for national and international medication studies.

CardioMEMS, a medical device company founded in Atlanta, has developed a proprietary wireless sensing and communication technology for the human body.  This technology is designed to manage aneurisms and chronic cardiovascular diseases.  

Celtaxsys was founded in 2005 with a focus on chemokine-mediated immune cell migration. Originally organized around technology licensed from the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Celtaxsys has grown beyond this license to develop a unique discovery platform that has identified and characterized novel mechanisms of immune cell migration that are unrelated to chemokines themselves. Celtaxsys was incorporated in 2005 in Georgia and is based in the Advanced Technology and Development Center (ATDC) of the Georgia Institute of Technology.        

CIBA Vision, the eye care unit of Novartis of Switzerland, is a leader in the research, development and manufacturing of contact lenses and lens care products.  With its worldwide headquarters in Duluth (25 miles northeast of Atlanta), CIBA Vision is one of the largest bioscience companies in the state, employing around 1,900 people.

CryoLife, Inc., a Kennesaw-based company located 30 miles northwest of Atlanta, is involved in transplant preservation, surgical adhesives and engineered tissue implants.    

Located in Norcross, Immucor, Inc. develops and manufactures products used by hospital blood banks, clinical laboratories and blood donor centers to test, detect and identify certain properties of human blood prior to patient transfusion.

Established as a joint venture between US-based Merck & Co. and France-based Sanofi-aventis, Merial is the world’s leading animal health company. The company is now headquartered in Duluth and has livestock and pet vaccine manufacturing facilities in Gainesville (55 miles northeast of Atlanta) and Athens (73 miles east of Atlanta).  Merial employs more than 1,000 people in Georgia.    

Athens-based Noramco, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, employs 200 people in the production of active ingredients for a wide-range of pharmaceutical products.

Saint Joseph's Center for Translational Research Institute (SJTRI) is known as a leader in the treatment of cardiac and vascular diseases, orthopedics, cancer, gastroenterology, and diabetes. Saint Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta is committed to translational research through activities in the Saint Joseph's Translational Research Institute. SJTRI has gathered scientists, industry partners, recognized physicians, and a collaborative network of national leaders in the evolving arena of translational research. Sciele Pharma, Inc. is a pharmaceutical company specializing in sales, marketing and development of branded prescription products focused on Cardiovascular/Diabetes, Women's Health and Pediatrics. The Company's Cardiovascular/Diabetes products treat patients with high cholesterol, hypertension, high triglycerides, unstable angina and Type 2 diabetes; it’s Women's Health products are designed to improve the health and well-being of women and mothers and their babies; and its Pediatrics products treat allergies, asthma, coughs and colds, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

Solvay Pharmaceuticals Inc., of Marietta, Georgia is the U.S. subsidiary of Solvay Pharmaceuticals — a research driven group of companies that constitute the global pharmaceutical business of the Solvay Group. The company seeks to fulfill carefully selected, unmet medical needs in the therapeutic areas of neuroscience, cardio-metabolic, influenza vaccines, gastroenterology and men’s and women’s health.

UCB, Inc. is determined to become the next generation biopharma leader and to enable families with severe diseases to lead normal, everyday lives. This is underpinned by a clear and pragmatic strategy. This strategy involves focusing on severe diseases in three therapeutic areas: Central Nervous System, Inflammation, and Oncology. UCB also has a selective presence in primary care.

Zygogen is a premier provider of zebrafish research products and services for academic and commercial applications. They provide proprietary zebrafish embryos directly to researchers for rapid, cost-effective, compound screening in their own laboratories. They also offer a full complement of zebrafish-based services, including screening assays and gene function analysis.
